Howdy Pat,
The pricing structure is by design. While we can and do plenty of custom Gunnars, the intent of the line is to be semi-custom and our answer to the main line production bikes. When folks want or need custom, we encourage them to look at the Waterfords. Gunnar and the Waterford 14 series share similar tube sets. The difference is with Waterford you get stainless steel dropouts (not available on Gunnar), a few tubing tricks, made to measure is included in the price, more geometry platforms, unlimited styling and color options, and what we call a "show car finish". And...well it is a Waterford.
For some, getting a made to measure frame may be a budgetary reach. Then a custom Gunnar is an exceptional value. But, when you add a Waterford level of finish, custom Gunnars will exceed the price of a Waterford. Think of it kinda like a Toyota-Lexus relationship.
