Hi all,

I like the utility of threadless stem/headset setups, but most of the stem options out there seem pretty ugly.

The classic looking Salsa steel stems (made at Waterford?) are an exception, but I read on another list that Salsa is taking those out of production.

Is there any chance that Gunnar/Waterford will continue production on their own? It would be esp cool to see them in a range of colors, though black or gray powdercoating would be just fine also.

Of course one could always go to a custom builder, but I guess I'm hoping that someone doing this on a larger scale could make them slightly cheaper for the public (as Gunnar does with stock frames).

It's all in the eye of the beholder... I fancy many of the stems out there today - esp the Deda Newton... Whoa baby...
Bang for the buck - nobody beats a Ritchey WCS or a Thomson.....

yeah, I do like the Thomsons now that I've checked them out a bit more, but the thought of a sleek steel stem painted to match a frame still appeals.

Note to all - we are still doing dirt road rides in Ann Arbor - IN THE DARK with lights - way cool. Wet roads were like peanut butter last night. It's interesting that the guys still riding are on Steel or Ti. Tough guys!!

There's little around that can match the beauty of the 70's / 80's Cinelli road stems in appearance, but for utility - ease of fitting and adjustment - quill stems can stay in the land of fond remembrance for me!

Right now, have a Deda Newton on my Sport, allied to Deda 215 "Italian" bend bars - the shallow, round bends (as opposed to those lumpy, bumpy ergonomic bars). Not bad, but every time I look at the Thomson on my Rockhound, I have this urge to splurge.

The Thomsons aren't exactly bad looking, but they are about bombproof - our local Gunnar dealer fits more Thomsons than anything else, and most are requested.

Yes, custom made and painted lugged stems would be awful nice!

As skilled labour is the premium part of buying anything these days, suspect you'd have to find a nice stem factory in Peking, or pay up ...

Any comments on making stems from the framebuilders' union?

I'd really like to find a nice stem that is SILVER. Everything seems to be black right now. I have all silver components, including the handlebars, but I'm stuck with a black stem. Maybe silver will come back into fashion.
